The day in short
A birding day, with your camera ready
This shared day trip is for people who love birds and like to photograph them. The departure is at sunrise, when the birds are most active, and the day is spent exploring the Danube Delta between Tulcea and Mila 23 in our open boat.
The Danube Delta is one of the richest bird habitats in Europe, with more than 370 species recorded. On the way the boat moves slowly through very different habitats: narrow reed channels, wide open lakes, shallow wetlands and floating reed islands. Each habitat has its own birds, and they often change from one corner of the Danube Delta to the next.
There is no fixed route. Your guide chooses the way on the day, following the weather, the water level, the season, the migration and the latest sightings, to reach the places where the birds are at that moment. In Mila 23, a Lipovan fishing village in the middle of the Danube Delta, there is a break and an optional lunch in a local household.
Birding first, photography along the way. This is not a specialised photo tour. You do not wait for hours for the perfect picture of one species in perfect light. The aim is to see as many species as you can and to give you good chances to photograph them whenever the conditions allow. Think of it as a birding trip where you should definitely bring your camera. If you want to spend hours with one species, choose one of our photo tours.
The highlights
What makes the day

Sunrise · the start
The best hours for birds
The departure is at sunrise, when bird activity is at its peak and the light is soft and warm.

All day · by boat
Close to the birds
Our 7.3 m open boat was built specially for the Danube Delta and for tourism. With 8 guests on board it gives generous space and freedom to move for watching and photography, and its shallow draft takes us into the wild places. When the conditions allow, the guide slows down or stops the boat and positions it for better light and angles.

All day · with your guide
A birder and a photographer
Your guide is an experienced birder and wildlife photographer, who knows both where to find the birds and what makes a good picture.

Before you book
Is this trip for you?
Birding first
The day is about finding as many birds as you can and photographing them when the chance comes. If your goal is to spend hours with one species in perfect light, one of our photo tours will suit you better.
An early start, back in the afternoon
The departure is at sunrise, followed by 8 to 10 hours on the water: a fabulous birding route from Tulcea to Mila 23, the lakes around the village, and back to Tulcea.
One group, one pace
Up to 8 guests share the boat, so everyone has room to watch and to photograph. The guide keeps one pace for the whole group. If you want the boat and the guide only for yourself, choose a private birdwatching day trip.
Meet our guides
Experts in the wild
Our guides are more than birding experts. They are birders and wildlife photographers, conservationists and naturalists, some with degrees in biology, who take part in bird monitoring and conservation projects. They know where the birds are, how they behave and how to get close without disturbing them.
Birders and photographers
They help with the difficult identifications and with the light, the angle and the position of the boat.
Local
They live and work in the Danube Delta and Dobrogea, and are in the field in every season.
The bird comes first
No chasing, no flushing, no stress for a picture or a tick on the list.
Our commitment to conservation
Nature comes first
Our tours are designed to keep our impact low and to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Danube Delta. By choosing this trip you support a slower, more careful way of exploring it.
Lower power engines
Our boats run on engines with less power than they would normally carry. That means less disturbance in the water, less fuel and lower emissions.
A slow, steady pace
Moving slowly protects the aquatic vegetation that fish need for breeding, prevents erosion of the banks and reduces stress on migratory and resident birds.
Distance from nests
We never enter nesting or breeding areas, and we keep our distance from bird nests along the shoreline. No picture is worth disturbing a bird.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
What time do we leave?
At sunrise, from Port Tulcea Aval. Sunrise changes through the season, so we send you the exact hour when we confirm your booking. Be ready for an early start.
When are we back in Tulcea?
The trip lasts 8 to 10 hours, so you are back in Tulcea in the afternoon.
Is this a photo tour?
No. It is a birding day with good chances for photography along the way. The guide stops and positions the boat for light and angles whenever the conditions allow, but you do not spend hours with one species. For that, see our photo tours.
Can I ask for particular species?
Yes. Tell us when you book which birds you hope to see, and we help you build a realistic wish list for the season. To get to know the birds before the trip, see our list of the birds of the Danube Delta and Dobrogea. On a shared trip the guide balances the wishes of the whole group, and wildlife is wild, so no species can be promised.
Is lunch included?
No. In Mila 23 you can have an optional lunch in a local household, a traditional fish menu. It costs 100 to 150 RON (€20 to €30) per person, paid in cash. Tell us in the morning, at the boarding point, if you want lunch.
Do we wear life jackets?
Yes. A life jacket is provided and must be worn during the whole boat trip.
How many guests are needed for the trip to run?
A minimum of 4 guests, and a maximum of 8. You travel with other guests, on the same boat. If fewer than 4 guests have booked, the trip does not run and you get a full refund.
Can I book a private boat for this trip?
Yes. If you prefer a boat and a guide only for your group, see our private birdwatching day trip.
How early should I book?
As early as you can. With only 8 seats, this trip often fills up long before the date, and we cannot add seats at the last minute.
