The guesthouse
Quiet, clean and small, right on the water
Alexandru & Alexandra House has only 8 rooms, so it never feels like a hotel. You wake up a few steps from the Old Danube, in a village with no cars, and the boat picks you up at the guesthouse.
We have worked with this family since 2018, and it is one of the places our guests remember most, for the food as much as for the rooms. After a morning on the water you can swim in the pool, or sit on the terrace with a glass of wine.

Rooms, food and a pool
8 rooms, all with a private bathroom
On the first floor: 4 double rooms with a double bed and 2 twin rooms with two beds. In the attic: 2 triple rooms, with a double bed and a single bed. The rooms are small, but they have everything you need: air conditioning, TV, Wi Fi, towels, soap and shampoo. You reach the floors by an outside staircase.
Lipovan cooking, made in the house
Daniela cooks the traditional fish dishes of the Lipovans of Mila 23: fish soup (different recipes, including storceag), saramura, plachia, salted, dried or marinated fish, fried fish with polenta and garlic sauce. Fresh, well made and served on time. Her kitchen built the reputation of this house, year after year.
Pool and terrace
A small courtyard, very well arranged: the swimming pool with sun loungers and a large terrace where the meals are served. The dining room seats 40.
One menu for everyone. With one cook in the kitchen there is no menu à la carte: the same meal is cooked for all guests, after we ask you what you eat. If you want a menu without fish, or vegetarian, tell us when you book and you get it. Smoking is not allowed inside the house, in the rooms or in the dining room.

Before you book only a room
A bed in the Danube Delta is the easy part
Mila 23 is an island village. There are no roads and no cars, and everything you want to see is on the water. A room alone does not take you anywhere.
“Don’t worry, we’ll see here. We’ll arrange something.”
Ask about trips in any village of the Danube Delta and this is the answer you will hear. It means there is no plan and no solution in sight. If there were one, they would tell you. What comes is a solution of the moment, and in almost every case it is not the right one for you. Are there trips? With a guide? Who speaks English? Who knows anything about the Danube Delta? “We’ll see here, we’ll find a solution.” You always end up on a speed boat, on the cheapest trip possible, with a driver who can’t wait to finish the run, speaks almost Romanian and is on the phone all the way.
Every trip needs a boat
Getting to Mila 23, the lakes, Letea or the sea: all by boat. Arranging that on the spot, day after day, is far harder than it looks from home.
A real guide is rare
In any village of the Danube Delta, finding on the spot a guide who speaks good English and can name even a few birds is close to impossible.
Roofs and plastic sheeting
They are sold as comfort, but they are needed only because of the speed. Behind them, with loud music on board, you see almost nothing of the Danube Delta.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book only the room, without a tour?
No. At Alexandru & Alexandra House we book stays only as part of our tours, with the boat transfer from Tulcea, the guided trips and the meals included.
How do I get to the guesthouse?
Mila 23 has no road. We transfer you by boat from Port Tulcea Aval to Mila 23, and the transfer is included in the price of your tour.
Is the guesthouse good for children?
Yes, and children love the pool. The two triple rooms in the attic fit a family of three, but the rooms are small. For a larger family, Vaida House has rooms for four.
I do not eat fish. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Tell us when you book and you get a menu without fish or a vegetarian menu.
Can I have a room to myself?
Yes, with a single room supplement. You find the amount on the page of each tour.
