The trip in short
Summer birding, at the right hours
In July and August the birds of the Danube Delta are busy early and late, and rest through the hot middle of the day. This trip takes you out in exactly those hours: the first 4 hours after sunrise, or the last 4 hours of daylight.
From about 9:30, hundreds of speed boats race through the main channels, the heat grows strong and the birds hide in the reeds. Before that, and after it is over, the Danube Delta is quiet again: birds feeding in the open, flocks moving between lakes, calls coming from every reedbed.
The departure is from Tulcea, so no time is lost on a transfer. Your birding guide chooses the channels and lakes for the season, the water level and the latest sightings, and helps you find, identify and understand the birds at your own pace. Beginners and experienced birders are equally welcome: the guide adapts the trip to your level and your wish list.
The bird comes first, always. We never drive at a bird to make it fly, never enter nesting areas and keep a respectful distance. You will learn how to approach birds without disturbing them, which is also how you see them best.

What you can see
The birds of a summer trip
In July and August you have good chances to see both species of pelicans, white tailed eagles, several kinds of herons and egrets, great and pygmy cormorants, grebes, terns and kingfishers, and with some luck an otter or a golden jackal. Wildlife is wild, so no sighting can be promised, but your guide knows where to look and when.

- No shade. Even at these hours the summer sun can be strong.

Before you book
Is this trip for you?
Birding first
The trip is about finding and watching birds. Bring your camera if you like, but if images are your main goal, our private summer photo tour, with a photographer guide, will suit you better.
Coming in spring or autumn?
From April to June and in September and October, choose our private birdwatching day trip: 8 to 10 hours on the water, from sunrise, on a route planned around your wish list.
Prefer to share the boat?
If you travel alone or as a couple, our shared birding day trip starts at sunrise, with up to 8 guests and a price per person.
Meet our guides
Experts in the wild
Our guides are more than birding experts. They are conservationists, researchers and naturalists, some with degrees in biology, who take part in bird monitoring and conservation projects. Years in the field mean they know where the birds are, how they move through the seasons and how to watch them without disturbing them.
Specialised birders
They know the calls, the plumages and the difficult identifications, and help you at your own level.
Local
They live and work in the Danube Delta and Dobrogea, and are in the field in every season.
The bird comes first
No chasing, no flushing, no stress for a picture or a tick on the list.
Our commitment to conservation
Nature comes first
Our tours are designed to keep our impact low and to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Danube Delta. By choosing this trip you support a slower, more careful way of exploring it.
Lower power engines
Our boats run on engines with less power than they would normally carry. That means less disturbance in the water, less fuel and lower emissions.
A slow, steady pace
Moving slowly protects the aquatic vegetation that fish need for breeding, prevents erosion of the banks and reduces stress on migratory and resident birds.
Distance from nests
We never enter nesting or breeding areas, and we keep our distance from bird nests along the shoreline. No sighting is worth disturbing a bird.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Morning or evening: which is better for birding?
Both work well. In the morning the birds are at their most active and the water is usually calm. In the evening the birds feed again and flocks fly to their roosts. If you stay a few days, you can book both.
Why only 4 hours, and why not at midday?
Because in July and August the birds are active only early and late. From mid morning the heat is strong, the birds rest in the reeds and the main channels fill with speed boats. A longer trip would add hours, not birds.
Is the price per person or per boat?
Per boat: €450 for 1 to 4 guests, €500 for 5 to 8 guests, children included.
I am a beginner. Is this trip for me?
Yes. On a private trip the guide adapts to your level: help with identification, how to use binoculars, how birds behave and how to watch them without disturbing them. Experienced birders get the same freedom, at a faster pace and with a longer list.
What birds can we see?
Usually pelicans, herons, egrets, great and pygmy cormorants, grebes and terns, often a white tailed eagle, and with some luck an otter or a golden jackal. See our list of the birds of the Danube Delta and Dobrogea. Wildlife is wild, so no sighting can be promised.
I do not have binoculars. Can I still come?
Yes. Tell us when you book, and we lend you a pair for the whole trip, at no extra cost.
How many people can join?
A maximum of 8 guests per boat, children included. The boat has 8 seats, and for birding everyone needs room to move and use binoculars. For a larger group we use more boats; write to us for the price.
Do we wear life jackets?
Yes. A life jacket is provided for everyone and must be worn during the whole boat trip.
