Mammal List of the Danube Delta and Dobrogea
58 mammals of the Danube Delta and Dobrogea, from golden jackals and European mink to sousliks and Black Sea dolphins, with names in five languages.
The Danube Delta and Dobrogea are as rich in mammals as they are in birds. Our checklist holds 58 species: golden jackals, otters and European mink along the channels and in the reed beds, sousliks and Romanian hamsters on the steppe, the free roaming horses of Letea, and dolphins along the Black Sea coast.
How the list is made
The checklist is kept by our guides, who are on the water and on the steppe every day of the season. It is built from our own field records and from the records published for the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, and new species go in as soon as a record is confirmed.
Names and order follow the Mammal Diversity Database of the American Society of Mammalogists, so the list matches the field guides and apps you already use. Species are grouped by family, from hedgehogs, shrews and bats to the carnivores, the deer and the dolphins, and every species shows its global status on the IUCN Red List.
How to use it
- Search a mammal by its name in English, Romanian, Spanish, German or French, or by its scientific name.
- Choose the language of the names, and the whole list switches to it.
- Use the Tick what you see button to open My Danube Delta Checklist and tick each mammal you meet: today, on a trip with its own dates, and in your Danube Delta life list.
- Print the list or save it as PDF and take it with you in the field.
